2015 Altovinum Evodia

February 8, 2018

From Eric Solomon comes this Garnacha variety from Aragon, Spain.  Hand harvested and aged in French oak this is a dark jammy wine with powerful notes of blueberry, oak, vanilla on the nose and a moderate body with gobs of jam with a good balance between fruit and acidity.  Some cocoa powder too.  Went super well with Manchego cheese and medium intensity Gruyere.  This wine was under $10 and a great value.

Miles Wine Cellars Treasure

February 2, 2018

The Finger Lakes are known for making excellent dessert style wines, but usually with white grapes. One look at this port style bottle and you know that this is a different type of dessert wine. Miles Cellars delights any port lover with this ruby styled version made with Lemberger grapes. Cherries, cassis, coffee and chocolate predominate on the nose. The mouth is similar to the nose, with a viscous and smooth texture. One sip is not enough so its worth seeking out your own bottle to take the chill out of the house.

Heron Hills Winery 2015 Eclipse Red

January 17, 2018

Heron Hill created a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot that is both affordable and pleasing. With bright ruby in the glass, the aromas of dark berries, smoke, cherry wood, and cassis get the senses piqued. On the palate, the wine is initially a bit tight with moderate tannins and acidity. Further exposure to air brings out more smoke, mild fruit flavors and bittersweet chocolate. Overall it is a good purchase as long as the consumer pairs this meritage with the appropriate entree such as steak or short ribs.
