Red Wine

2015 Altovinum Evodia

February 8, 2018

From Eric Solomon comes this Garnacha variety from Aragon, Spain.  Hand harvested and aged in French oak this is a dark jammy wine with powerful notes of blueberry, oak, vanilla on the nose and a moderate body with gobs of jam with a good balance between fruit and acidity.  Some cocoa powder too.  Went super well with Manchego cheese and medium intensity Gruyere.  This wine was under $10 and a great value.

Franciscan Estate’s 2003 Magnificat

February 2, 2018

To celebrate a special day I opened a bottle of Franciscan Estate’s 2003 Magnificat. I’ve had this bottle in my cellar for nearly 13 years. Leah prepared a fantastic dinner and this wine went so well. What a treat!

Heron Hills Winery 2015 Eclipse Red

January 17, 2018

Heron Hill created a red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot that is both affordable and pleasing. With bright ruby in the glass, the aromas of dark berries, smoke, cherry wood, and cassis get the senses piqued. On the palate, the wine is initially a bit tight with moderate tannins and acidity. Further exposure to air brings out more smoke, mild fruit flavors and bittersweet chocolate. Overall it is a good purchase as long as the consumer pairs this meritage with the appropriate entree such as steak or short ribs.

Holiday Mulled Wine with Keuka Spring Vineyards Epic Reserve 2015

December 24, 2017

It’s cold out there… so why not warm up to a mulled red wine. A European tradition in various forms and names, mulled wine is basically various spices, sugar, brandy and wine warmed up on the stove. The aromas wafting from the kitchen will alone put you in the holiday spirit. And sitting on the couch sipping from your warm mug will make you wish winter would stay longer.

Bergstrom 2011 Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard

November 29, 2017

This is a wine that was purchased during a visit to Bergstrom several years ago. The presentation of this wine is exceptional with a beautiful bottle and powerful label. The nose is complex but the taste is a bit hollow. The overall score is still respectable despite the lower price/value.
