The Brown Hound Bistro

On a sunny Monday afternoon, we stopped for an early dinner at The Brown Hound Bistro.  This cozy establishment is on the south west side of Canandaigua Lake in the town of South Bristol.  Head Chef Evan Schapp creates a locally sourced and seasonal menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  We chose to sit on the deck in the back of the building, away from the road and under a delightful white and red canopy.

 

Our selections were quickly picked off the menu after hearing the enticing daily specials.  We shared the Truffle Potatoes for an appetizer.  These came out with soft insides and mildly crunchy outsides and just the right amount of sea salt and white truffle oil.  Often overlooked, potatoes took the main stage for us and were quickly devoured as we enjoyed two glasses of Finger Lakes wine.

The two main entrees came about ten minutes later.  The pan seared pork tenderloin was crispy on the outside but tender and moist when sliced into.  Wilted seasonal greens and vinegar potatoes accompanied the pork with a delightful whole-grain mustard vinaigrette.  The duck breast entree was cooked to perfection with a crispy outside and pink inside.  The chef prepared it with an Asian-flare including soba noodles, black sesame seeds and succulent shiitake mushrooms.

Wait staff was very attentive but also allowed us to have ample time to sit back and enjoy the serenity of the early evening on the deck.  Of note, the kitchen and staff were knowledgable regarding gluten and dairy restrictions and were happy to accommodate us.  The wine list includes only Finger Lakes Wines, a refreshing and admirable accomplishment.

 

Our overall impression was enthusiastically positive when considering the atmosphere, locally sourced and fresh menu, wine list, and overall experience.  We plan on returning before the end of their season as they close in the colder months and reopen every spring.
